flatulence symptoms

Flatulence or bloating is an excessive accumulation of gases in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). This may be a consequence of both increased gas formation and their insufficient excretion from the body. The gastrointestinal tract of a he althy person contains a certain amount of gases. Their number and nature vary depending on lifestyle, age, nutrition.

Causes of flatulence

Gases are formed in the body in several ways. Firstly, it is the swallowing of air during meals and drinks. This is called aerophagia. Secondly, the release of gases occurs during digestion as a result of the neutralization of pancreatic and gastric juices by bicarbonates. In addition, part of the gases comes from the blood and is formed due to the vital activity of the intestinal microflora.

Severe flatulence without pathologies observed

severe flatulence
severe flatulence
  • When swallowing large portions of air while eating, drinking drinks with a high content of gases, when eating food quickly ("on the run"). All this provokes an excessive flow of gases into the stomach. As a result, there is a violation of the secretion of gastric juice necessary for digestion. Food is not able to break down into proteins, fats and carbohydrates, so the resulting residues begin to ferment and rot in the intestines. This leads to the production of a large amount of gas, resulting in increased flatulence. Symptoms are manifested by cramps, pain and distension of the abdomen.
  • Eating too much gas-producing foods such as beans, apples, cabbage.
  • When consuming foods that can enhance the fermentation process: brown bread, beer, kvass.
  • In people who are lactose intolerant, i.e. dairy products.
  • In pregnant women, due to compression of the intestines by the uterus: the movement of food and the process of absorption of nutrients slows down.

Flatulence: Symptoms

When a spasm occurs in the large intestine, there is a violation of the discharge of gases. This is accompanied by an increase in the abdomen, bursting, pain, discomfort. Increased discharge of gases from the intestines is another manifestation of the disease flatulence. The symptoms of pain are mild, but there is a "rumbling" in the abdomen, a feeling of "transfusion" of fluid inside, bursting.

flatulence caused by pathologies of the digestive system

  • Mechanical flatulence occurs when there is an obstruction in the gastrointestinal tract, such as stenosis, tumor or adhesions.
  • Dynamic flatulence - with motor dysfunction of the gastrointestinal tract (peritonitis, infections and intoxication).
  • Inflammatory diseases of the digestive system or bowel disease.
  • Circular flatulence resulting from local circulatory disorders.

Treatment for flatulence

If the patient has severe flatulence, a specialist consultation is necessary. Depending on what caused the disease, the necessary treatment is determined. For example, if foods were eaten that cause abundant gas formation, then this could provoke flatulence. Symptoms in this case are manifested by pain in the abdomen, bursting, a feeling of discomfort. It is necessary to adjust the diet, reduce the number of foods that provoke seizures. Flatulence resulting from diseases of the gastrointestinal tract requires the use of drugs, the appointment of which is determined by the doctor.
