Epithelial coccygeal passage is a congenital disorder, which is accompanied by the presence of a narrow channel located in the thickness of the subcutaneous tissue in the region of the intergluteal fold. In fact, many people may be unaware of the existence of such a defect for many years. Nevertheless, such a pathology is often accompanied by inflammation and suppuration, which already requires medical attention.

What is the epithelial coccygeal passage?

Such education is formed in the period of embryonic development. The causes of such a neoplasm are still unknown, but during the formation of organs and tissues, a small hollow tubular formation remains under the skin, the inner walls of which are covered with epithelial tissues. The epithelial coccygeal passage opens outwards with several pinholes, through which the excretion of waste products of the epithelium occurs from time to time. Unfortunately, these same openings can become a gateway for infection.

As already mentioned, many people are not even aware of the presence of a problem, since the coccygeal passage does not affect the quality of life at all. However, when the infection enters, an inflammatory process begins, accompanied by an accumulation of pus. The same result can be observed when the external channels are clogged, which can happen with trauma, constant combing, and non-compliance with personal hygiene. Symptoms of inflammation are hard to miss, as the accumulation of pus is accompanied by constant sharp pains: patients cannot even sit down. In some cases, the skin over the course swells, turns red, and becomes hot to the touch. Sometimes you can observe an increase in body temperature, as well as weakness and other symptoms of intoxication. From time to time, you can notice the release of a small amount of pus. If left untreated, the abscess may open on its own, releasing purulent contents to the outside. Of course, in such cases, the main symptoms subside, but the risk of relapse is high.

Fortunately, today there are ways to get rid of the problem. Sometimes medical treatment or piercing of the skin over the coccygeal cyst leads to the outflow of pus and the disappearance of the main signs. However, the risk of developing a new abscess is very high. Therefore, the only way out for patients diagnosed with epithelial coccygeal passage is an operation performed by an experienced surgeon. During the procedure, the doctor completely removes the subcutaneous formation, cleanses the surrounding tissues of pus, and also eliminates all existing fistulas and external ducts: today this is the only truly effective method of treatment. During the rehabilitation period, the patient is prescribed prophylactic antibiotics, which usually lasts 5-7 days. This will prevent the development of infectious lesions of the skin and subcutaneous tissue. In addition, physiotherapeutic methods are used to speed up the healing process, as well as regular treatment of the wound on the body with antiseptics and special ointments. The likelihood of recurrence in this case is directly related to the quality of the operation and care during the recovery period.
